A Brief Description of Fayette County

Quality of life is what most often attracts people to Fayette County. With one of the highest rated school systems in Georgia and the lowest crime rate in Metro Atlanta, this family-oriented community is only 25 miles from downtown Atlanta and 15 miles from Hartsfield International Airport, one of the busiest in the world. An exciting, thriving business climate has led national and multinational corporations to establish administrative, distribution and manufacturing facilities in Fayette.

Fayette County was enacted in 1821 and is the 49th county in Georgia. Because some of the new settlers were Revolutionary War veterans, it is surmised that they were instrumental in naming the county for Marquis de LaFayette, who fought alongside General George Washington in that war.

Fayette County is home to the oldest courthouse in Georgia, built in 1825. Fayette County also provided some of the inspiration and locale for Gone With The Wind. Author Margaret Mitchell spent summers of her youth in her grandfather's home here. Much of the research on the book was done in the county, and the Glynn Street School was formerly the "Fayetteville Female Academy", which the fictional Scarlett O'Hara attended.
